The degu is a small rodent native to Chile in South America.
They’re part of the same family as chinchillas and guinea pigs and are known for being social, active, and very curious little creatures.
Degus are very vocal and communicate with each other using a wide range of sounds – chirps, whistles, and even grumbles. Can you hear what they’re saying to each other?
They love to dig, climb, and chew, so their enclosures are always full of toys and tunnels to keep them busy and entertained.

Degus mainly eat hay, grasses, and specially formulated degu pellets, along with the occasional treat like dried herbs or dandelion leaves. They must avoid sugar though, as they are prone to diabetes.
Unlike most rodents, degus are active during the day, which means you’re more likely to spot them running around and playing!
We have a lovely little group of degus here at Monk Park Farm – see if you can spot them all and watch their busy little world in action!
