Buzz Off, Flies – It’s Flystrike Prevention Time! 🐑☀️

Things have been busy out in the fields this week as our Fly Prevention Team — Farmer’s Laura, Charlotte, and Nick — have been giving the sheep a bit of extra TLC to keep them safe from flystrike.

With the warmer weather on the way (fingers crossed! 🌤️), blowflies start to appear, and while they might just seem annoying, they can cause real trouble for sheep. Flystrike happens when flies lay their eggs on the sheep, and the hatched maggots cause serious irritation. Not pleasant — for them or for us!

To help prevent this, we’ve been applying a special treatment that keeps the flies at bay and helps stop any eggs or larvae from taking hold. It’s all part of our regular seasonal care to make sure the flock stays healthy and happy.

You might also notice some of the lambs have shorter tails — this is something we do carefully to help reduce the risk of flystrike. Long tails can get a bit messy (especially with curious little lambs!) and attract flies, so docking helps keep things clean and comfy.

As always, our top priority is the wellbeing of our animals — and we think they’re looking pretty content out there right now!
