The Soay sheep (pronounced Sow-Ay) is a rare breed sheep, which is named after the Isle of Soay in Scotland.
They are a very small breed and are not typically used on commercial farms due to the lambs lacking size and weight.
Due to their hardiness, they can survive in the most adverse weather conditions.
They are a largely feral breed and are not usually sheared as they lose their fleece from April onwards.
Male Soay are called ‘Rams’ or ‘Tups’, females are ‘Ewes’ and their young are ‘Lambs’.
They are pregnant for 148 days (just under 4 months), which is shorter than the average sheep pregnancy.
