The Oxford Sandy and Black is a rare, traditional breed of pig native to Oxfordshire, where they have been in existence for more than 300 years, making them one of the oldest pig breeds in the British Isles.
This breed gets its name from their distinctive coat, which is sandy with black spots. This colouring gives it greater protection against sunburn.
By the 1940’s, the breed was in decline with extinction inevitable by 1985 but due to a few determined enthusiasts, the breed was protected and their numbers rose.
They are easy to manage and have an excellent temperament and produce meat of excellent quality and flavour. They are excellent at foraging, often turning lush green grass into muddy fields. They also enjoy fresh fruit and vegetables and pig pellets.
Males are called ‘Boars’, females are called ‘Sows’ and their young are called ‘Piglets’.
They are pregnant for 3 months, 3 weeks and 3 days.
